A friend of mine and I were invited to a costume party last weekend, so I had to consider a number of fancy dress ideas. Those parties never really seem to live up to the hype, whether its because only a quarter of attendees actually dress up or that the quality of effort outside of Halloween is usually disappointing. Because of that, we ended up not going, but it did strike up a conversation. We thought of what we would be if we hosted a "zero-tolerance" classy dress-up party- one where entry required being costumed as a classy character from fiction, history, or the present. I quickly decided it would have to be Doctor Who. The attire is quirky and professorial- a blend of dapper and disheveled. It would also lend itself to acting during the party in the awesome mannerisms I love about the character. Also, it wouldn't be too hard to find the necessary materials! Almost any thrift store should have a weathered tweed sport coat and an appropriate scarf. A small price to pay for the right blend of sophisticated and fun for a costume party. |

I was dreading the Secret Santa at work this year. I’m new to the company and after I signed up for the pool I started to hear all sorts of stories about the dodgy presents people received last year. Someone also decided that no one should know who they were buying for, beyond having male and female sacks. “It’s going to be bath salts,” I thought, “bath salts or moisturiser.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. I had the perfect gift. The thing is, I love chunky bracelets, I always think they look wonderful and I have several, but I hardly ever wear any of them. They never sit properly on my wrist, and after at most half an hour they’ve lipped down once too often and been consigned to the back of the cupboard again. My new bracelet is wonderful. It’s made of smooth pieces of a dark brown wood I don’t recognise, strung together on two strands of elastic. It fits snugly but not too tight, and best of all has a slight taper on it so that it lies smoothly along my forearm. It’s perfect, and I wear it all the time – so at least my Secret Santa knows it was appreciated. |
